Most men know roughly how long they want a chain to be. Far fewer know what width they want, and that's the decision that changes the most. Two chains can sit at exactly the same point on your chest and look nothing alike, simply because one is 2mm wide and the other is 8mm.
This guide is about that one number. We've used our Cuban chains to show every width from 2mm to 12mm, because the link stays the same as it gets wider, so the only thing changing is the width itself.

Chain width is measured straight across one link, from edge to edge, in millimetres. A 4mm chain is 4mm wide at its widest point. That's all the number tells you.
It doesn't tell you how thick the chain is from front to back, or how much it weighs, and that's why the same width can look different from one chain to the next. A Cuban's links are flattened so they lie flat against the skin, which puts a broad face of metal on show. A round rope chain or an open figaro of the same width shows less surface, so it tends to look finer. If you're comparing styles, our guide to types of men's chains shows each one side by side.
Width is also a separate question from length. Length decides where a chain sits; width decides how much it says once it's there. If you haven't settled on a length yet, start with our chain length guide, then come back here.
Here's every Cuban width we make, how it looks once it's on, and where you'll find it in our range.
| Width | On the neck | Good for | Our Cubans in this width |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2mm | A fine line, links barely visible | First chains, under shirts, layering | Steel in silver and gold; sterling silver |
| 3mm | Fine, with a little more glint | Everyday wear in precious metal | Sterling silver |
| 4mm | Links clearly visible, still understated | Most men, most days | Steel in silver, gold and rose gold; sterling silver; Miami Cuban |
| 6mm | Noticeable from across a room | Wearing solo over a T-shirt | Steel in silver and gold; sterling silver; prong link iced |
| 8mm | Bold, the focus of the outfit | A statement worn on its own | Steel in silver, gold and rose gold; Miami Cuban; iced |
| 10mm | Heavy and fully iced | Nights out, maximum shine | Iced Cuban Chain |
| 12mm | The whole look | Broad frames, plain clothes | Steel in silver and gold; prong link iced |
At 2mm a Cuban is a thin line of metal at the base of the neck. You'll catch the twist of the links up close, but from a distance it simply reads as "chain". That makes it the easiest width to wear with anything, including a buttoned shirt, and the best partner for a heavier chain if you layer. Choose the 2mm in silver or gold, or go for 2mm sterling silver.

3mm sits between the delicate 2mm and the everyday 4mm. We make it in hallmarked sterling silver, where the extra millimetre gives the polished links a little more room to catch the light. If you want a slim chain in a precious metal, the 3mm sterling silver Cuban is the one.

4mm is our most popular Cuban width, and it's easy to see why. It's the point where the links become clearly visible without the chain taking over, so it looks deliberate with a T-shirt and still works under an open collar. If you only buy one chain, this is the safest width to start with: the 4mm in silver, gold or rose gold. The Cuban 4mm Set adds a matching 4mm bracelet.

Step up to 6mm and the chain stops being a detail. The links are wide enough to notice from across a room, and the chain becomes something you style the rest of the outfit around. It suits a T-shirt or an open shirt better than a buttoned collar. See the 6mm in silver and gold, or the 6mm in sterling silver.

8mm is a chain people will comment on. The links are big and flat, and the chain has enough weight to hang cleanly over a T-shirt or knit. It's best worn alone, or with one much slimmer chain beside it so the 8mm keeps the attention. Choose the 8mm in silver or gold, or the Cuban 8mm Set to match it at the wrist.

Our 10mm Cuban comes fully iced, with stones set across every link. Width and stones together make it one of the most eye-catching chains we sell, so it's one for nights out rather than every day. It comes in gold and silver.

12mm is our widest Cuban, and at this width the chain is the outfit. It needs room, so wear it over a plain T-shirt or knit, keep everything else simple, and don't layer anything heavy with it. It suits broad shoulders and a strong neck best. Choose the 12mm in gold or silver.

Width isn't the only thing that decides how big a chain looks. The style of Cuban changes it too, so it's worth knowing how our versions compare at the same number.

If you're still between two widths, three questions usually settle it.
Your build plays a part too. A broader neck and shoulders carry a wide chain without it looking heavy, while on a slimmer frame the same chain can dominate. When you're torn, go one width narrower: you can always add a second chain, but you can't make a wide one look smaller.
Once you're wearing a Cuban of 4mm or more, one of the best things you can add is a pendant on its own longer chain, hanging below it. It's a look that works precisely because of the width.

If you'd rather hang a pendant straight from a slim Cuban, our guide to putting a pendant on a Cuban explains which widths take one, and you'll find every design in our pendant collection.
A millimetre or two sounds like nothing on a product page, but it's easy to see in the mirror. Here's a quick way to try a width at home:
Paper won't show you shine or how the links move, but it's a good guide to scale. For length, use the chart in our chain length guide.
4mm. It's our most popular Cuban width by some distance, because it's visible enough to look deliberate and slim enough to wear every day with almost anything.
Straight across a single link, from one edge to the other, in millimetres. It doesn't measure thickness or weight, which is why two chains of the same width can look quite different.
No. A 2mm chain is designed to be subtle. It's a good first chain, it sits neatly under a shirt, and it's the easiest width to layer with something heavier.
Bold. At 8mm the individual links are easy to see from across a room, and the chain becomes the main feature of what you're wearing rather than a detail.
Only if you want something low-key. A 12mm Cuban is a full statement piece. It suits broad shoulders and plain clothes that leave room for it, and it's best worn on its own.
Often, yes. Wide chains lie flat and take up more room at the base of the neck, so many men go one size longer from 8mm upwards. Our chain length guide covers how to choose the length itself.
Yes. Each step up in width adds metal to every link, so a 12mm Cuban weighs considerably more than a 2mm chain of the same length. That weight is part of why wide chains hang so flat.
Yes. Our stainless steel Cubans are fine in the shower and the rain. Take them off for pools, hot tubs and the sea, where chlorine and salt are hard on any finish.
Width is the quickest way to change what a chain says. Stay slim and it's a quiet detail; go wide and it's the focus of everything you wear. If you're unsure, start at 4mm and work out from there.
