Most men who wear the Virgin Mary didn't pick her at random. She was the medal in a grandmother's purse, the statue on the landing, the name said quietly before a big moment. Wearing her is a way of keeping that close.
This guide explains what Virgin Mary jewellery means, how to read the details on it, and how to choose between a ring and a pendant, with every Mary piece we make laid out side by side.

Mary is the mother of Jesus. In AD 431 the Council of Ephesus gave her the title Theotokos, Greek for "God-bearer" and usually translated as Mother of God, and she has been at the heart of Christian devotion ever since.
When a man wears her, he usually means one of four things:
If you're weighing Mary against St Jude, St Christopher or the crucifix, our guide to the most powerful religious pendants for men sets them side by side.
A pendant sits out of sight. A ring stays where you can see it. Featured: Enamel Virgin Mary Signet Ring (Gold).
Art about Mary has its own visual language, built up over centuries, and most of it turns up on jewellery. Once you know it, you can read any Mary piece at a glance.
Mary is dressed in blue for a very practical reason. The finest blue pigment, ultramarine, was ground from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan, and in Renaissance Europe it was at times valued as highly as gold. Painters kept their best blue for Mary's robes as a way of honouring her. The deep blue enamel on our Enamel Virgin Mary pieces follows that same colour code.
In 1830 a young nun, Catherine Labouré, reported visions of Mary in a chapel on the Rue du Bac in Paris. Rays of light streamed from Mary's hands, and Catherine was told they stood for the graces given to those who ask for them. The medal made from her vision, the Miraculous Medal, spread so fast that more than a billion existed by the time she died in 1876. Rays around Mary have meant grace ever since.
A heart on Mary's chest is the Immaculate Heart, a symbol of her love for God and for people. It's traditionally shown pierced by a sword or wrapped in roses. The devotion was spread by the French priest John Eudes in the 17th century and grew again after the reported apparitions at Fátima in 1917.
Virgin Mary, Our Lady and Madonna all mean the same woman. Madonna is Italian for "my lady", which is why it's the word you'll hear in Italian art. Titles such as Our Lady of Grace point to one particular side of her, in this case the grace she's asked to pass on.
A pendant sits under your shirt, close to the heart but mostly out of sight. A ring is the one piece you see yourself, dozens of times a day: on the steering wheel, around a coffee cup, on the hand you shake with. That's the case for wearing Mary on your hand rather than your chest.
Our Enamel Virgin Mary Signet Ring shows Mary at prayer with rays of light around her hands, set against deep blue enamel inside a beaded oval. A single red stone sits above her, and the face rests on a smooth shank. It's made in 18K gold or in silver, and it comes in three sizes, S, M and L. Our ring size guide shows how to find yours.
Silver makes the blue look sharper and cooler. Featured: Enamel Virgin Mary Signet Ring (Silver).
Gold turns the blue richer and darker, closer to an old church icon, so it's the more traditional choice. Silver makes the same blue look sharper and cooler, and it sits more easily beside a steel watch or other silver rings. If you already wear one metal every day, start there.
Signet custom says the little finger, and that's where a Mary ring looks most like a family heirloom. But there's no rule for a devotional ring. If you want to see it as often as possible, the index or middle finger of your writing hand puts it right in front of you. Our guide to styling a men's signet ring covers which hand and finger, and how to stack, while what it means when a man wears a signet ring covers the history of the signet itself.

We make Mary in five different ways for the chest. Here's how they compare:
| Piece | What's on it | Size and chain | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enamel Virgin Mary | Mary at prayer, rays of light, deep blue enamel, one red stone | 35mm x 25mm, on a 2mm rope chain, 51cm | You want colour, or a match for the ring |
| Our Lady of Grace | Mary inside an engraved arch, the Immaculate Heart at her chest, antiqued finish | 20mm x 16mm, on a 2mm Cuban chain, 51cm | You want it to look handed down |
| Mini Virgin Mary | A small hand-carved Mary on an oval medal | Pendant only, fits any 2mm or 3mm chain | You want it under a shirt, or layered |
| Jesus & Mary | A crucifix and a Virgin Mary medal, with a larger engraved medallion | Three pendants on a 2mm Cuban chain, 51cm | You want Christ and Mary together |
| Jesus & Mary Cross Pendant | A cross with a Virgin Mary medallion beside it | Pendants only, fit 2mm, 3mm and 4mm chains | You want a cross as the main piece |
The Enamel Virgin Mary pendant is the ring's design at pendant size: the same blue, the same rays and the same red stone, at 35mm by 25mm. It's the boldest Mary we make, and the colour makes it a centrepiece rather than a background piece. It comes in gold and silver.

Our Lady of Grace frames Mary inside an engraved arch, with the Immaculate Heart at her chest. The antiqued finish darkens the recesses, so it reads like a medal that's already been worn for years. At 20mm by 16mm it's the most understated of the full pendants. It also comes in silver.

The Mini Virgin Mary shows Mary standing with her hands lowered and open, a pose that will look familiar to anyone who knows the Miraculous Medal. It's sold as a pendant on its own, so you can hang it on a chain you already own or add it to a layered look. It comes in gold and silver.
Small enough to wear under anything. Featured: Mini Virgin Mary (Gold).
The Jesus & Mary necklace puts three pieces on one chain: a crucifix, a small Virgin Mary medal and a larger engraved medallion. It's the choice for men who don't want to pick between Christ and his mother. It also comes in silver. If the crucifix is what draws you, our guide to the cross and the crucifix explains what sets them apart.

The Jesus & Mary Cross Pendant turns the balance around: the cross leads, with a small Virgin Mary medallion hanging beside it from the same bail. It's sold without a chain and fits 2mm, 3mm and 4mm chains, so it's an easy way to bring Mary into a cross you'd wear anyway.

Whichever you choose, our men's chain length guide will help you decide where it should sit.
Yes, and it's one of the few times a matching set looks deliberate rather than overdone. The Enamel Virgin Mary ring and pendant share the same design, so wearing both says you chose Mary on purpose. A few rules keep it clean:

No. Mary is honoured by Catholic and Orthodox Christians, and Anglican and Lutheran churches mark her feast days too. Some Protestant traditions are more cautious about devotion to her, so if you belong to one, it's worth knowing that the image may mean more to some people than to others.
Plenty of men who wear her aren't practising at all. They wear her because their family did, because of where they grew up, or because of someone they've lost. That's a sincere reason. The only real rule is the one you'd apply to a family photo: wear it as something that matters, not as a costume. If it's the idea of being watched over that appeals, rather than Mary herself, our guide to angel necklaces for men looks at the guardian angel.
Every piece in this guide is built on a solid 316L stainless steel core and finished in 18K gold or, for silver, rhodium. That makes them hard-wearing enough for every day, with a few sensible habits:
A Virgin Mary ring is a way of keeping Mary in sight. For Catholic and Orthodox wearers it's a standing request for her prayers; for others it stands for a mother's care, family faith or the place they come from.
Usually that she matters to him personally. Men wear Mary for faith, for protection, in honour of their mum or grandmother, or because she was always part of home. The pendant keeps that close to the chest.
Partly because of cost. Ultramarine, made from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan, was at times valued as highly as gold in Renaissance Europe, and painters reserved it for Mary's robes as a mark of honour.
They stand for grace. The image comes from the Miraculous Medal of 1830, where the rays from Mary's hands represent the graces given to those who ask for them.
It's the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a symbol of her love for God and for people. It's traditionally shown pierced by a sword or wrapped in roses, and the Our Lady of Grace pendant carries it at her chest.
Yes. Mary is honoured across much of Christianity, and many men wear her for family or heritage rather than doctrine. Wear it with the same respect you'd give a family photo and it will never feel out of place.
Ours, yes. Every piece in this guide has a 316L stainless steel core, so showers and rain are fine. Take it off for pools, hot tubs and the sea, and for heavy lifting, which can knock the enamel.
It comes in three sizes, S, M and L. Our ring size guide shows how to measure your finger and which size to choose.
Whether it's for faith, for family or for the people you carry with you, a Virgin Mary piece only needs to mean something to one person. Choose the ring if you want to see her every day, the pendant if you'd rather keep her close to your chest, or both if she's earned it.
