How to Style a Distressed Cap: Outfits, Fit and Jewellery

How to Style a Distressed Cap

A new cap can look a little too new. Stiff crown, sharp colour, a brim that hasn't decided which way to bend. A distressed cap skips all of that. It arrives softened, faded and slightly frayed, as if it has already done a few summers with you.

Here's what makes a cap distressed, how it should fit, which colour to choose and the outfits it suits, plus the fine chains that sit best alongside it.

What Makes a Cap Distressed?

Distressing is wear added on purpose. The cap is washed to soften the cotton, dyed so the colour settles unevenly, then roughed up along the brim and seams so the edges start to fray. The result looks lived in from the first day.

Ours goes through all three stages. The Distressed Cap is made from pre-washed cotton twill, dyed and distressed for a broken-in feel, and finished with tonal CRAFTD embroidery that blends into the crown instead of shouting from it.

The shape matters as much as the finish. It's a low-profile, lightweight cap with a soft, unstructured crown and a pre-curved bill, the style often called a dad cap. It sits closer to the head than a stiff baseball cap, and that closeness is much of what makes it look relaxed.

Look at the brim: that wear is built in. Featured: Distressed Cap (Washed Black).

Six Panels or Five?

Look at the top of any cap and you'll see the crown is built from fabric sections stitched together. The number changes the look.

  • Six-panel caps have six sections meeting at a button on top, with a seam running down the centre of the front. The shape is rounder and follows the head. Our Distressed Cap and Varsity Cap are both built this way.
  • Five-panel caps use one wider panel across the front, with no centre seam, which gives a flatter, cleaner face. Our Gentlemen's Club, Yacht Club and Signature caps are five-panel.

Neither is better. Six panels suit the worn-in, rounded feel of a distressed cap; five panels give a sharper front for a bold design. You can compare the two in our caps collection.

How It Should Fit

A low-depth cap sits nearer the head than a structured one, so fit is about where it rests rather than how high it stands.

  • Just above the ears. The band should sit level, a finger's width above the tops of your ears, without pushing them out.
  • Snug, not tight. If it leaves a red line on your forehead, loosen the strap a notch.
  • Brim forward. The pre-curved bill is made to face the front, shading the eyes. Worn backwards, a soft cap loses its shape.
  • Tidy the strap. Ours is one size with an adjustable fabric strap. Once it's set, tuck the loose end through so it lies flat.

Washed Black, Black or Cream

Washed black

Our best-selling shade, faded towards charcoal with the most visible wear at the brim. It's the easiest to throw on, because it already looks like it belongs with old jeans and a grey tee. Pair it with silver.

Black

The black version keeps a deeper colour, so it reads a touch neater. Choose it if most of your wardrobe is black and you want the cap to disappear into the outfit.

Cream

The light one. Cream lifts a dark outfit straight away and is at its best in warm weather, with white tees, linen shirts and tanned skin. It also shows dirt fastest, so it rewards a little care. Pair it with gold.

Five Ways to Wear It

Plain tee, fine chain

The simplest outfit and still the best. A heavyweight white, grey or black T-shirt, straight jeans, clean trainers and one fine chain at the neckline. The cap takes care of the character, so everything else can stay quiet.

Overshirt or chore jacket

Layer a twill overshirt, chore jacket or denim jacket over a tee. The washed cotton of the cap picks up the texture of workwear, and the whole look feels considered without trying hard.

Knitwear

In colder months, a crew-neck jumper in navy, grey or oatmeal sits well under a distressed cap. Lay a fine chain on top of a thin knit and it shows just enough at the collar.

Off-duty and travel

Airport, weekend away, morning coffee: this is the cap's natural habitat. Joggers or loose trousers, a hoodie or sweatshirt, and the brim pulled low.

A step smarter

With a camp-collar or Oxford shirt worn open, chinos and suede shoes, a cream or black cap keeps a smart-casual outfit relaxed. Keep everything else sharp so the cap looks like a choice.

Know when to leave it behind, though. Indoors at dinner, at weddings and anywhere with a dress code, the cap comes off.

The Jewellery That Works With It

A distressed cap is relaxed, so the jewellery should be too. Fine chains between 2mm and 3mm add a point of light at the neck without competing with the cap. Heavier chains can work, but they pull the outfit towards streetwear.

Connell Chain, 2mm

Our bestselling chain and the quietest way in. Choose the Connell Chain in silver or the gold version: it's slim, light and barely registers until it catches the light. See our Connell chain piece for how it earned that place.

Rope chain, 3mm

Twisted links give a 3mm Rope chain more texture than a flat chain, which suits the worn look of the cap. Our guide to the rope chain explains how it's made.

Wheat chain, 3mm

The Wheat chain has a braided look that stays neat and flat. In silver it's the obvious partner for washed black. There's more on the style in our wheat chain explainer.

Getting the length right

With a crew-neck tee, 50cm is the safe choice: it rests a little under the collarbone, visible above the neckline. Step up to 55cm if you're tall or you prefer it lower on the chest. For the full breakdown, see our chain length guide, and for more ways to keep it pared back, read minimalist jewellery for men.

Keeping Its Shape

A distressed cap is meant to look worn, but you still want it to keep its shape.

  • Follow the label. Ours is dry clean only. Skip the washing machine and the tumble dryer.
  • Brush, don't scrub. A soft clothes brush lifts dust from the crown and brim between wears.
  • Let it breathe. After a warm day, leave it somewhere airy so the sweatband dries before you store it.
  • Store it in shape. Hang it on a hook or rest it crown up. Avoid crushing it at the bottom of a bag.
  • Trim, don't pull. If a thread comes loose at the frayed edge, snip it with scissors.

Distressed Cap FAQs

What does a distressed hat mean?

It means the cap has been washed, dyed and roughed up on purpose before it's sold, so the colour looks faded and the edges look worn. You get the softness and character of an old favourite without waiting years for it.

Is a distressed cap the same as a dad cap?

They overlap. A dad cap is the shape: unstructured, low in the crown, with a curved brim. A distressed cap is the finish. Ours is both, a low, soft cap that has been washed and frayed.

Is the Distressed Cap six-panel or five-panel?

Six-panel. The crown is built from six fabric sections that meet at a button on top, with a seam running down the middle of the front.

How do I get the strap right on a distressed cap?

Ours is one size with a fabric strap at the back. Loosen or tighten it until the cap sits just above your ears without pressing on your forehead, then tuck the loose end away.

Can you wash a distressed cap?

Ours is labelled dry clean only, so the washing machine is off limits. Brush off dust with a soft brush between wears and send it to a dry cleaner when it needs more than that.

Will the distressing get worse over time?

It will soften and keep developing as you wear it, and that's the idea. If a loose thread appears at the brim, trim it with scissors rather than pulling it.

What chain goes with a cap?

Something fine. A 2mm or 3mm chain balances a relaxed cap without competing with it. Match the metal to the cap: silver with black and washed black, gold with cream.

When shouldn't you wear a cap?

Take it off indoors at a meal, at a wedding or anywhere with a dress code, and for anything formal. A cap belongs with casual clothes and outdoor plans.

Worn In From Day One

The point of a distressed cap is that it never looks forced. Get the fit right, keep the outfit simple and add one fine chain, and it will look like it has always been part of your wardrobe.
