Why are married Brits not wearing wedding rings in 2025?
The wedding ring is a timeless circle of trust, worn to symbolise love, loyalty and commitment.
However, for a lot of married Brits, it seems that circle breaks the second it feels “too tight”, “too small” or “too impractical”. The excuses pile up, but the underlying truth is: the ring just isn’t right.
We’ve surveyed 2,000 Brits to uncover the truth about wedding bands and discovered that 72% of married Brits admit they’ve pulled the classic ‘excuse card’ to skip wearing their ring. From gyms to offices to holidays, excuses stack higher than champagne towers at a wedding.We’ve delved into the minds of the married to reveal how long the ring stays on for, the biggest reasons they’re ditched, and the surprising places people choose not to wear them.

The top excuses Brits give their partners for not wearing their wedding rings
Our findings revealed that 72% of people have made up an excuse to explain removing their wedding ring. But which are the most popular?
1 in 10 (10%) of respondents said they have taken off their wedding ring because they don’t want to damage it. Understandably, seeing as your wedding ring is one of the most meaningful things you own.

The real reasons Brits are removing their wedding rings
Aside from those who generally just don’t want to wear a ring, our survey found that 31% of people in the UK use the excuse “because it’s uncomfortable”. Another common reason? ‘It makes my job impractical’ We get it, especially for hands-on work. That's why plenty of men opt to wear their ring on a chain during the day and slip it back on when outside of work - what’s most important is that it’s on your person.
When are Brits most likely to take off their wedding ring?
While 46% of Brits said that they have never intentionally removed their wedding ring, others admit that there are certain places where their ring just doesn't make the cut.
So, let's unpack exactly what we’ve found. Doing DIY tops the list, because let’s face it, safety comes first. The gym comes next amongst men and women, which is also a practical choice - lifting weights is not always a wedding band-friendly exercise.
Then there are the cheekier 10% of men and 2% of women, who said they take their ring off before a night out and the other 6% of men who leave it behind before a holiday.

How far into marriage are we calling it quits on the ring?
Interestingly, men are quick to say they’d be upset if their partner didn’t wear a ring (45% vs. 38% of women) - but ironically, many of them aren’t wearing theirs. By now, we know there are many reasons why the ring may not be where it belongs, from genuine mishaps to rings that just aren’t quite right. But how many years into these loving partnerships does the ring come off?

Our research proved what we’d hoped all along: The majority of people are proud to show their commitment to their forever, with 58% wearing their wedding ring consistently. But it’s still not enough.
We've all heard of the seven-year itch, and it's clearly still here in 2025, as we found that by year seven, 25% were already ditching their ring. This was even higher in men at 29%.When it comes to wearing their rings, women appear to be slightly more honourable, with 84% of men removing their ring, compared to just 61% of women admitting to taking it off.While it's clear love birds in the 1-3 year stage were still going strong, as an impressive 92% flaunt their ring with pride. Choosing a timeless wedding ring could keep rings where they belong - permanently on married hands.
